Kathy Church and Carl RiggsCarl Riggs, chairman of the Georgia Council of Trout Unlimited, presented a check for $6,676 to Smithgall Woods’ education coordinator Kathy Church. The funds were raised during the recent “Tie 1 On” Tie-Athlon at the Bass Pro Shops in Lawrenceville, GA. They will be used to support the youth education programs at Smithgall Woods State Park in Helen.

The Georgia Council of Trout Unlimited is part of a national network of grassroots volunteers who are dedicated to trout and salmon conservation. Georgia TU is devoted to conserving, protecting and restoring Georgia’s trout fisheries.

Smithgall Woods, an angler’s paradise, was acquired by the state in 1994 as a gift-purchase from Charles A. Smithgall Jr., a noted conservationist and businessman. One of north Georgia’s premier trout streams, Dukes Creek, runs through this spectacular mountain property and is a favorite for catch and release fishing. Five miles of trails and 18 miles of roads allow hikers and bicyclists to explore hardwoods, streams and wildlife.
